Hello PMISFBAC Community from Cynthia, your Career Coach Partner.

Let’s talk…LinkedIn Networking

I’ve had several conversations with project managers and aspiring project managers about the critical importance of networking for job search and overall career progression and success. With social media offering us a platform to connect and develop networking relationships across the globe, LinkedIn networking involves using the LinkedIn platform to build and maintain professional relationships and is a highly recommended platform to engage in, that is, if you aren’t already doing so. This includes connecting with colleagues, industry peers, recruiters, and potential employers. LinkedIn allows you to engage with others by sharing content, commenting on posts, following and engaging with your target employers and connecting with employees of target companies, joining groups and participating in group discussions, and sending direct messages to those you would like to network with to start building community.

Let’s highlight two significant benefits:

1. Accelerate Finding Your Next Job:

  • Visibility to Recruiters: Active networking on LinkedIn can increase your visibility to recruiters and hiring managers who use the platform to find candidates.
  • Job Referrals: Connections can provide referrals, which are often valued by employers and can give you an edge over other candidates.
  • Access to Job Postings: LinkedIn's job board is extensive, and networking can help you learn about job openings even before they are publicly advertised; otherwise known as the hidden job market.
  • Company Insights: Networking with current or former employees of a company can provide valuable insights into the company's culture, hiring process, and what to expect in interviews.

2. Develop Your Overall Career:

  • Knowledge Sharing: Engaging with your network allows you to stay informed about industry trends, best practices, and innovations.
  • Professional Development: Networking can lead to mentorship opportunities, guidance from experienced professionals, and access to resources for skill development.
  • Building a Personal Brand: Consistently sharing relevant content and participating in discussions can help establish you as a subject matter expert/thought leader in your field.
  • Career Advancement: Strong professional relationships can lead to promotions, partnerships, and opportunities for career growth.
  • Support System: A robust network provides a support system for career advice, feedback, and encouragement during job transitions or career challenges.

By actively participating in LinkedIn networking, you not only enhance your chances of landing your next job, but also create a solid foundation for long-term career success. However, your participation would best serve you if you do the following activities:

  1. Optimize your LinkedIn profile to showcase your personal brand which differentiates you from others and highlights what value you offer to future employers.
  2. Infuse keywords used in your industry or target roles throughout your profile, specifically in the skills and experience sections.
  3. Enhance your activity beyond “liking” or utilizing various emoji reactions by commenting on your interest of selected posts or sharing your expertise and/or perspective.
  4. Engage regularly for visibility. Engaging does not mean you need to react or comment every day, but ideally, you should develop a habit of engaging on a schedule that works for you to keep your visibility strong and you memorable to your community.

If you are already actively engaging in other social media sites like Facebook, X, Instagram, etc., add LinkedIn to your social media list to ensure you are targeting and engaging with the professional networks who can further move you along in your career.

Happy LinkedIn networking!
