PMI SFBAC CEO Job Description


The San Francisco Bay Area Chapter (SFBAC) of the Project Management Institute (PMI) is seeking a Chief Executive Officer. 


The Chapter is a non-profit, tax-exempt; “Mutual Benefits Corporation” organized under the State of California as an IRS 501(c) 6 organization and represents 3,000 members. This is currently the largest PMI Chapter in Region 7 and is one of PMI’s longest-running Chapters, celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2024. 


The CEO provides the direction and leadership required to support the Chapter's mission and to deliver on its defined goals and objectives. This is a volunteer position that is best suited for a candidate looking for an opportunity to hone their executive management, help define and execute the chapter’s strategy, and collaboration skills, and work in a Policy Governance framework. The CEO leads and manages the Chapter’s Volunteer Team, which consists of 50-70 volunteers, including the Executive and Operations teams.


CEO candidates should be able to allocate between approximately 10-20 hours per week depending on the Chapter’s activities. The CEO candidate must be or become a PMI and an SFBAC chapter member in good standing and act in accordance with the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.

  • Financial: Currently there is no financial compensation for the CEO position.

CEO Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Policy Governance – With the assistance of the Operations Team, perform strategic planning to ensure that the Chapter achieves agreed-on chapter objectives.
  • Board Administration and Support - With the assistance of the Operations Team, provide reporting to the Board and attendance at monthly board meetings.
  • Program, Product, and Service Delivery - Manage key teams: marketing, finance, I.T., professional development, events, and sponsorship; attend quarterly operations meetings. Develop and support new programs to grow and improve the chapter. 
  • Financial, Tax, Risk, and Facilities Management - Oversee event vendor contracts and monthly invoices in close collaboration with CFO. 
  • Human Resource Management – Oversee the management of human resources.
  • Community and Public Relations - Assure that the Chapter’s programs, products, and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders. 
  • Fundraising (nonprofit-specific) - Oversee sponsorship strategies and implementation.
  • Chapter Event Involvement - Attendance at Chapter events and conferences.
  • Other: 
    • Ensure all chapter information is updated with PMI Global (charter renewal, officer names, website data including bylaws, mission, values, etc)
    • Able to exercise sound judgment on finances, personnel, events or seeking CFO/COO and board support
    • All of these may require continual monitoring of email at a daily frequency

CEO Qualifications: 

  • Organizational, leadership, and collaboration skills with the ability to establish the strategies necessary to achieve the Chapter's mission and to deliver on its defined goals and objectives. 
  • Communication/stakeholder management skills that support customer service.
  • Experience with the development of organizational performance objectives, as well as reporting on these objectives on an established schedule. 
  • Creative problem-solver with the ability to inspire, capacity-build, and empower an all-volunteer organization. 
  • Experience with budgets and financial planning
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products & G Suite.
  • Ability to utilize online document management and collaboration tools. 
  • Experience working as a volunteer in either PMI SFBAC, PMI other Chapters, or other not-for-profit organizations
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience. 
  • PMP or ACP Certified and working knowledge of the PMI Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). 
  • Must live or work in San Francisco Bay Area 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a startup environment. 
  • Experience in project or program or portfolio management 
  • Experience in managing distributed teams across functional areas. 
  • Masters of Science in Project Management, Master of Business Administration (MBA), or equivalent experience. 
  • Knowledge of or experience with working within a Policy Governance framework.
