Thank You, Nancy Chin: A Chapter Leader Who Led with Heart
A farewell tribute to outgoing Board Member Nancy Chin
Nancy Chin's PMI SFBAC journey started with a question she'd keep asking herself: "How hard can it be?" First as Marketing Director, where she quickly discovered the role was the lifeline connecting members to chapter events. Then as Chief Administrative Officer. And finally, after Vijay convinced her to apply, as a board member — because, after all, "it's only once a month." Each time, Nancy rose to meet the challenge.
Highlights of a Remarkable Tenure
Nancy's leadership shone brightest as co-lead of the chapter's 50th anniversary celebration alongside Paulo — a gold-themed cruise on the San Francisco Bay that nearly didn't happen. When the board was split between a cruise and a hotel, a member survey settled it by a single point. Nancy and her team delivered an evening the chapter still talks about today.
As Treasurer, Nancy leaned into a role outside her comfort zone with characteristic honesty. She learned to tell the story behind the numbers, to partner closely with the CFO, President, and CEO on budget alignment, and to uphold the chapter's financial integrity. Her biggest board realization? "It's not just a once-a-month meeting." The subcommittees, strategic discussions, and quiet behind-the-scenes work are invisible until you step into those shoes.
Family, In Every Sense of the Word
When Nancy calls PMI SFBAC her second family, she lives it. At the 2025 PMI Global Summit in Phoenix, she could be found pushing fellow board member Mahesh's two-year-old through the conference halls in a stroller — and when they bumped into the PMI CEO, she introduced the toddler as "the youngest project manager." That's Nancy: warm, joyful, and always making everyone feel like they belong.
Looking Ahead
Nancy's advice to incoming board members: be open-minded, roll up your sleeves, and remember that results come from the team, not the individual. For the chapter's future, she urges leaders to listen to the membership and practice what we preach on AI — "Let's make sure we drink the Kool-Aid."
Thank You, Nancy
Nancy would like to recognize Vijay for encouraging her to apply, Jay for his mentorship, and Mary Ann, Carin, and Jocelyn for their guidance and support. Nancy — your warmth, your willingness to learn, and your dedication have left a mark on this chapter that will be felt for years to come.
