Meet at the Woods Lot on Mount Sutro to sign in and receive orientation (Location Link).

Event Prerequisites:

Please bring water and wear clothes for getting dirty: long pants and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Layers and long-sleeved shirts are also recommended. All participants will need to sign waivers to participate (link to waiver). Please fill them out in advance and bring with you.

Event Structure: 

9:00 – 9:30 am Sign in and orientation

9:30 am – 12:30 pm Habitat and trail stewardship projects.

12:30 – 1:00 pm If you would like to stay for lunch. Lunch and refreshments are provided by Sutro Stewards at 12:30 PM.

Event Description-

Sutro Stewards work to conserve habitat through ecological restoration and native plant propagation while providing recreational opportunities in the UCSF Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve. Mount Sutro Open Space, located in the geographic center of San Francisco, was overlooked by surrounding communities for a century. In the last decade, the true value of the open space was revealed through the Sutro Stewards’ creation of multi-use trails, allowing the public to explore this exceptional place. Sutro Stewards works with city agencies and land managers to continue to expand the network of connectivity between San Francisco opens spaces. We will work with Sutro Stewards to build and maintain trails, improve habitat, and increase biodiversity. Trail and habitat stewardship projects include trail building and maintenance, invasive weed removal, native planting, and more.

Parking is available at the Woods Lot during program hours. If the Woods Lot is full, additional parking is available at the adjacent Surge Lot (~ 50 feet north).

MUNI N-Judah, 6 and 43 bus lines all come within walking distance of Mount Sutro Open Space. From Parnassus, walk up Medical Center Way and look for stairs going up on the left. Go up the stairs and across the Surge Lot to the right, then take another set of stairs up to the Woods Lot.
