Event Description:

Adam Varat, Deputy Director of Citywide Planning with the San Francisco Planning Department, will present on the City of San Francisco’s efforts to plan for climate resilience, including both climate mitigation and climate adaptation efforts, with a focus on sea level rise adaptation.

San Francisco is considering its approach to climate resilience holistically, recognizing that even as we continue to pursue net zero carbon emissions, we must simultaneously plan for climate adaptation. The impacts of climate change are already being felt across California and within San Francisco, with catastrophic wildfires, extreme heat events, historically poor air quality, storm-based and coastal flooding, and coastal erosion. Over the next decades these forces are projected to get worse, impacting already stressed systems such as housing supply, transportation and utility infrastructure, and waterfront open space. At the same time, these changes present an opportunity (with thoughtful planning) to provide multiple community benefits, such as shoreline access, improved mobility, and new open space, and improve our relationship to the natural world.

Adam will present on San Francisco’s response to these long-term climate-driven changes, including sea level rise adaptation planning, flood protection, and community-based planning to increase resilience to climate-driven hazards. Specific project examples will include the Islais Creek Adaptation Strategy in the southeastern waterfront and Ocean Beach improvements.
