Event Description |
Unconscious bias contributes to health care inequities in the United States. There are quality and service gaps by gender, race, ethnicity, age, and other parameters that lead to poor health care outcomes and even death. Physicians who are not white and female physicians also face discrimination by leadership. The IAT was developed to show that unconscious bias exists but has limitations for improving outcomes. Analytics combined with systems analysis can identify gaps and create strategies to close health care gaps. This workshop will showcase a project that improved the service scores for hundreds of physicians using data segmentation and systems analysis. The program will begin with an interactive exercise using postcards that was developed by David P. Campbell, PhD. Using historic picture postcards, people will select cards based on several questions such as who would you want to work for or have as a neighbor. The goal is to make people more aware of the factors that influence how they perceive groups different from themselves. People will discuss in small groups why they selected the cards that they did at a level they are comfortable with. This activity is to be interesting, engaging, and non-threatening. |
