A Sunday of Service, Connection, and Joy at St. Mary’s Center
June 29th was more than just a day of volunteering for the Project Management Institute’s San Francisco Bay Area Chapter—it was a meaningful opportunity to come together and serve the community at St. Mary’s Center in a way that left a lasting impression on everyone involved.
The day kicked off with laughter and lighthearted fun during a spirited game of bingo. As numbers were called and prizes claimed, the room lit up with energy and playful competition. What may have started as a simple game quickly became a celebration of life, community, and the small joys that bring us together.
When it came time for lunch, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work in a kitchen that was new to all of us. Navigating unfamiliar appliances and tools, we partnered with the Center’s dedicated staff to prep, cook, and serve wholesome meals to 57 seniors. It was a true team effort that wasfilled with creativity, collaboration, and moments of improvisation.
Though the space was unfamiliar, we were able to adapt quickly with the help of the amazing staff. Whether it was chopping fresh ingredients, cooking rice, stirring pots, washing dishes, managing time, or carefully plating each meal, every task was met with enthusiasm and care. While there were moments of hustle and challenge, we were guided by a shared purpose, knowing each meal carried not just nourishment but also intention, dignity, and love.
As the scent of home-cooked food drifted through the center, the seniors arrived and were greeted with warm smiles and welcoming faces. Lunch became more than just a meal; it was an opportunity to connect. We sat down together to have meaningful conversions and enjoyed each other’s company. In those moments, it became clear that what we were offering went beyond food. We were creating space for presence and belonging.
What made the day truly memorable wasn’t just the tasks we completed, but the spirit in which we did them. With humility, compassion, and a deep desire to uplift others, we created a shared experience that left everyone a little more connected and a little more joyful.
In the end, our Sunday at St. Mary’s Center reminded us of the profound impact of simply showing up with open hearts and willing hands. It was a day of service as well as a celebration of community, adaptability, and the power of kindness. As we packed up and said our goodbyes, we carried with us not just the satisfaction of giving, but the joy of having received just as much in return.
